YOU READ IT HERE FIRST: A cognitively impaired 17-year-old boy lunged at a police officer with a knife and then threw it at him before being taken into custody, Closter Police Chief Dennis Kaine said this morning.

Officer Vincent Sarubbi went to a local residence on a 911 hangup at 5 o’clock last night and was met by the homeowner, who told him that her son had made the call.

“She went on to explain that everything was OK,” Kaine said.

Suddenly, her son came down the stairs and lunged at Sarubbi, the chief said.

The officer quickly closed the door in front of him, but the boy opened it and threw the knife, Kaine said.

Sarubbi, who wasn’t struck, then took him into custody with assistance from Officer Daniel Hargrave.

The boy was brought to Bergen Regional Medical Center for a psychiatric evaluation.

Police issued juvenile complaints to him charging aggravated assault and weapons possession. These were being forward to the Family Part of Superior Court in Hackensack.
