UPDATE: A tractor-trailer was stopped on the shoulder when it was rear-ended by a Subaru wagon on northbound Route 287 near Exit 65 in Mahwah, killing its driver, around 2:15 p.m., police at the scene confirmed this afternoon.
Valley Hospital paramedics pronounced the death after joining Mahwah and New Jersey State police at the scene, a little over a mile from Route 17, Mahwah Police Chief James Batelli told CLIFFVIEW PILOT.
The center and right lane remained closed, with traffic crawling in the left lane, past rush hour.
Mahwah Rescue 1 was summoned just before 6:30 p.m. to remove the 2011 Outback driver, who apparently was in his late 50s and from New York State, a responder at the scene told CLIFFVIEW PILOT.
Two lanes of the northbound highway remained closed for what was expected to be an extended operation that will likely include a complete shutdown at some point.
