YOU READ IT HERE FIRST: A Hackensack detective cracked the burglary of a Newman Street bodega after finding a stolen cash register hidden under clothing in a nearby backyard.
The owner called police after finding the front window smashed and the register missing Tuesday morning, Detective Capt. Thomas Salcedo told CLIFFVIEW PILOT this morning.
Detective Sgt. Michael Antista searched the area and found the register with the money still in it, so police set up surveillance.
About five hours later, two men — identified as Shajee Jackson and George Wright — picked up the register, the captain said.
Police followed them to a third-floor apartment on Newman Street, near the bodega, and knocked on the door.
The register was then thrown out the window, landing in the courtyard below, Salcedo said.
Jackson was being held on $15,000 bail in the Bergen County Jail, charged with burglary, theft, criminal mischief and several marijuana-related charges.
Wright was released on a summonses charging him with receiving stolen property.
