ONLY ON CLIFFVIEW PILOT: A 26-year-old Suffern man who never had a valid driver’s license received 21 traffic tickets from River Vale police following a wild chase into Pearl River during which they said he hit speeds of up to 80 miles an hour while swerving into oncoming traffic.
William Carey was clocked doing 52 miles an hour in a 35 mph zone on River Vale Road near the River Vale Country Club during afternoon rush hour last Friday, River Vale Sgt. John DeVoe told CLIFFVIEW PILOT this afternoon.
As the officer working the radar turned his cruiser around, Carey hit the gas of his four-door, 2003 Infiniti, accelerating into oncoming traffic to pass vehicles in front of him, before making an abrupt right onto Orangeburg Road, DeVoe said.
Police estimate Carey was doing more than 70 miles an hour at that point, again veering into the oncoming lane in other to pass traffic.
The River Vale officer kept the Infiniti within sight but dropped back, hoping to prevent an accident, DeVoe said.
Orangetown police were notified and pulled up as Carey first turned onto Blue Hill Road in Pearl River, passing cars in the oncoming lane, and then onto Veterans Memorial Highway.
“At this point, he’s up to more than 80 miles an hour, running through a red light at Blue Hill Golf Course, before getting caught in traffic,” DeVoe said.
Police from River Vale, Orangetown and Old Tappan converged on the car, ordering Carey out.
Orangetown police issued him summonses for their jurisdiction, impounded the vehicle and released Carey, DeVoe said.
Hours later, River Vale police had produced a stack of summonses to go along with a criminal complaint for eluding police.
DeVoe said the offenses include:
• 2 counts of speeding;
• 2 counts of reckless driving;
• 2 counts of careless driving;
• 2 counts of disregard of a marked lane;
• 2 counts of improper passing;
• failing to keep right;

• 2 counts of failing to produce a driver’s license;
